Literacy Development
Early childhood educators understand that play is the most important work of childhood. It's through play that young children come to understand the world around them. At Engadine Kindy Castle we focus on promoting early literacy through developmentally appropriate activities that are based in play.
It is critical to help young children be ready for school by working with them to develop early literacy and learning skills. Strong reading skills form the basis for learning in all subjects, it is important to begin developing literacy skills. Children who have been read to, learn through flash cards and other visual aids start school with important early literacy skills. They are prepared to learn to read and write. Children who have not had many experiences listening to books read aloud or talking about books typically start school with poor early literacy skills.
Our program ensures that literacy skills are developed on a daily basis. Below are some Literacy aims we have in place and how we can achieve them.
Literacy Aims(early reading and writing development)
• Phonological awareness – sound to letter recognition
• Develop vocabulary – via interactive reading, synonym discussions
• Building knowledge of written language – word banks , labels, tracing
• Spoken language - compare and describe objects
• Constructing sentences – group discussions, show and tell time, sentence story cards
•Letter recognition - Recognises the first letter of their own name and recognizes other words that begin with that letter
•Reading concept - Holds and uses a book correctly, knows that words are what you read and knows that words have meanings, uses books for enjoyment
